The Brooklyn Birthing Center (BBC) is a freestanding facility where low risk women are delivered in a warm home-like environment. The BBC is dedicated to the premise that families have the right to a safe and satisfying birth experience. The BBC provides high-quality, family centered maternal and newborn services to healthy women anticipating an uncomplicated pregnancy, labor and birth.

Our midwives offer continuity of care in a homelike out-of-hospital setting with ready access to the facilities and personnel of the acute care setting when deviations from the normal occur. We support a family's right to self-determination in an alternative birth environment.

At The BBC we believe that:

• Childbirth is a normal, healthy process. The role of the midwife as caregiver, in collaboration with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other health care providers, is to support and promote this normal process. Through careful screening, effects of deviations from normal are recognized and minimized. A commitment to the normal process is promoted in all aspects of care.
• Women have the right to health care that is medically safe, fits their lifestyle, and recognizes and respects their individual and diverse physical, social, spiritual, psychological and economic needs.
• Women and their families have the right and responsibility to assume an active role in their own health care. We encourage active participation of the client with out midwifery health care team in all aspects of decision making relevant to their health care.
• Maternity care should support and promote family unity and development. Family members, including siblings, should be involved in the childbearing experiences to whatever extents the family, as defined by the individual woman, desires.
• Education is an essential part of quality health care. The sharing of knowledge and free exchange of health information between our staff and clients enables women and their families to assume shared responsibility for, and make informed choices about, their health/maternity care.
• Providing and fostering an environment conducive to family-centered care enhances the childbearing experiences. It also reinforces the family's inner resources in assuming responsibilities for their health care, birth experience, and parenthood.
• Providing care in a team approach, utilizing midwives in collaboration with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other health care agency personnel, assures optimal health care to mothers and their newborns.

The BBC provides a complete network of maternity and women's health services. Our first-rate prenatal care provided by midwives includes laboratory and diagnostic testing, education, consultation with specialists and, most of all, attentive, sensitive care during labor and birth. Consultation with specialists and access to hospital care is readily available should the transfer to acute care be necessary.

The ultimate aim of the BBC is to give childbearing families confidence in their ability to give birth naturally, balancing technology with sensitive, humane care.
