Birthing Stories

BBC PATIENT COMMENT
My husband and I wanted to thank you again for the wonderful service of the Brooklyn Birthing Center.  We only originally explored an out-of-hospital birth as a means of just getting more information.  But right from your orientation and all throughout our appointments at the birthing center, we never had doubts about our decision to birth there.  We are grateful for the tremendous amounts of information given to us and how all our questions were treated seriously and answered.  When my labor began, Asya was extremely helpful and patient speaking over the phone with me (numerous times as I had a very slow labor) and knew just the right time to advise us to come in to the birthing center.  Once there, Yuliya set a very calm tone for my husband and I and saw us through each step of my labor.  The birthing assistants Eva and Kandia were at my side through all my contractions later in labor and after the birth. Kandia's "magic hands" truly were magic while I was in the tub as she massaged my back with each contraction. Asya guided me when it was time to push with very clear instructions which I greatly appreciate.  And then we got to meet our daughter!  Many say they can't recall the details of their labor and birthing, but I'm happy to remember all the details, even the uncomfortable ones, and that's because of the Brooklyn Birthing Center and its staff! Thank you! Laura, Colin, and Aoife (born 6/18/09)
Stories From Our Patients

Home Away From Home

After our son was born at The Brooklyn Birthing Center in 2004, my husband and I returned to have our daughter there in May, 2006. The Brooklyn Birthing Center is everything I could hope for—a relaxed and intimate atmosphere with a staff that is easy to talk to, and whose natural childbirth philosophy matches my own. At each visit, Kathy and Yuliya spent time answering my questions and asking a good many of their own, so that I knew I was well cared for. That first night after my son was born, sleeping with him and my husband in a comfortable queen-sized bed was heavenly. It was like a home away from home.

One

I chose the title One for this painting based on my experience at the Brooklyn Birthing Center. The word One has many meanings not only are we adding One addition to our family, but as pregnancy progresses you become One with the child growing inside you, as well as strengthening the bond between you and you partner. One also refers to the spiritual growth a pregnant woman experiences when bringing life into the world.

The brown figures in the center of the painting symbolize the union and progression between a man and a woman. When first coming to the Brooklyn Birthing Center, a couple enters as a pregnant couple then leaves with a new addition to their family, their baby. Brown is a rich earthy color representing our connection to each other.

The green figure surrounding the family symbolizes the Brooklyn Birthing Center and those who work there. Green is a color of vitality, life and growth. This green figure embraces the new family in a circular motion to show the continued and never ending support and selfless devotion given by the midwives.

The blue background represents the calm and peaceful environment The Brooklyn Birthing Center creates for the family and especially the new life being brought into the world.

I sincerely thank you for my experience in allowing myself and my family to bring our third child into the world the way we wanted. on our terms. We are truly grateful for your support, kindness and love.

The greatest gift we possess being female is being a woman, the greatest gift we can give is life…I Thank you! Namaste.

One love,
Gina.
